Effective Home Remedies for Shingles

1) Baking Soda or Colloidal Oatmeal Baths

Soaking in a bath with baking soda or colloidal oatmeal can calm itching and inflammation associated with shingles4 6. Colloidal oatmeal is finely ground oats containing lipids, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory compounds that soothe irritated skin4 .

For best results:

  • Use specially prepared colloidal oatmeal products, not regular oatmeal4 .
  • Add baking soda or colloidal oatmeal to lukewarm bath water4 6.
  • Soak for 10 to 15 minutes to avoid skin dryness or irritation4 .
  • Avoid hot water, which can worsen blisters by increasing blood flow6 .

2) Calamine Lotion

Calamine lotion does not speed healing but can improve comfort and reduce the urge to scratch6 .

3) Cool Compresses

Applying cool, damp compresses to the shingles rash can reduce pain, burning, itching, and inflammation3 67. To use:

  • Wash the affected area gently with mild soap and water to prevent infection3 .
  • Soak a clean cloth in cool water, wring it out, and apply it to the rash for 5 to 10 minutes several times a day3 6.
